Renaissance man Spenser (Robert Urich) cruises Boston, Massachusetts, in a vintage Ford Mustang solving cases for those who prefer a touch of class in their private investigators. Spenser's chief street contact, tall, menacing Hawk (Avery Brooks), operates on both sides of the law, while other friends, including Lieutenant Martin Quirk (Richard Jaeckel) and Sergeant Frank Belson (Ron McLarty), funnel valuable information to Spenser from within the Boston Police Department. Despite his success as a detective, Spenser remains unlucky in love as his girlfriend (Barbara Stock) refuses his continual offers of marriage because she fears any permanent involvement with a man who's always in danger in Spenser: For Hire.
