Alice

After the death of her truck-driver husband, a New Jersey housewife and her 12-year-old son head to Hollywood to follow her dream of stardom as a singer. But when the car breaks down in Phoenix, and with two mouths to feed, it's a waitress job for Alice.

Serving greasy food to demanding customers at Mel's diner, Alice (Linda Lavin) bonds with her oddball co-workers-- the fun-loving, man-chasing Flo (Polly Holliday); another aspiring singer, Belle (Diane Ladd); wise-cracking, ex-truck driver Jolene (Celia Weston); sweet, ditzy Vera (Beth Howland); and her gruff boss, Mel (Vic Tayback). And, though they always seem just out of reach, Alice never gives up on her dreams in one of the most popular situation comedies ever, Alice.
