Warner Home Video, America Online, And Turner Classic Movies Team Up For “DVD Decision 2003”
(May 9, 2003 – Burbank, CA) – In an unprecedented DVD event, Warner Home Video (WHV) will empower film fans to determine which classic films will be released next on DVD through “DVD Decision™ 2003,” a joint promotion with America Online and sister-division Turner Classic Movies.
WHV has selected 20 unreleased candidate films from its vault and AOL members will be able to vote for their top five favorites beginning in June. The five films with the most votes will receive their first-time DVD debut in January 2004. The remaining films will be scheduled for future DVD release. Voting will take place exclusively on AOL from June 2 to July 1 and the winning DVDs will be announced in July.
AOL members will be able to vote at AOL Keyword: DVD Decision, which is part of the AOL® Movies area. In addition, they will be able to find a brief synopsis, pictures, and exclusive clips from all 20 films. Non AOL-members can log onto www.tryaol.com/dvddecision to become an AOL member and vote.
“With DVD penetration levels surpassing 50 million households in 2003, now is the time to expose the quality and breadth of our treasured library to mainstream video consumers,” said Mike Saksa, WHV senior vice president U.S. marketing. “DVD Decision™ 2003 will utilize the vast reach AOL and TCM – two of the best resources of the world’s largest media company – to expose these films to a new generation of video consumers.”
From June 23-27 Turner Classic Movies will air each of the 20 films and promote voting at AOL Keyword: DVD Decision throughout the entire month. TCM will also re-broadcast the five winners selected by AOL members in October and promote their DVD release in January. Additional trailers, a history of the 20 films and a full on-air schedule will be posted on turnerclassicmovies.com.
“Warner Bros. has the world’s largest film library and consumers are constantly asking us when many of our classic titles will be released on DVD,” said WHV senior vice president of classic catalog, George Feltenstein, “and in this promotion, they get to choose which ones come out first.” Feltenstein said WHV hopes to make “DVD Decision”™ an annual event. With a 27.5% market share of DVD catalog, WHV commands the largest film library of any studio and more than doubles its nearest competitor.
All of the films will be re-mastered and will contain added bonus features where available.
“We are excited to partner with Warner Home Video and TCM on this program to allow our 26 million U.S. members the unique opportunity to have a real say in the DVD decision-making process,” said Steven Yee, General Manager & Vice President, AOL Movies and Moviefone. “Online voting and polls are core strengths for AOL and are extremely popular with our members.”
The 20 film candidates span over 40 years of classic Hollywood filmmaking and feature legendary stars such as Spencer Tracy, Judy Garland, Barbara Stanwyck, Gene Kelly, Jack Lemmon, Lana Turner, Sean Connery, Richard Burton, William Holden and a host of other luminaries. Titles selected for “DVD Decision™ 2003” are “The Actress,” “After the Thin Man,” “Another Thin Man,” “The Asphalt Jungle,” “Bad Day at Black Rock,” “The Blackboard Jungle,” “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” “Executive Suite,” “Finian’s Rainbow,” “For Me and My Gal,” “The Good Earth,” “I’ll Cry Tomorrow,” “Love Finds Andy Hardy,” “Night of the Iguana,” “The Postman Always Rings Twice,” “Somebody Up There Likes Me,” “Where the Boys Are,” “The Wind and the Lion” and “Ziegfeld Girl.”
"TCM is proud to be the showcase for these films on TV," said Tom Karsch, EVP and GM of Turner Classic Movies. "It's great to be part of this synergistic effort along with AOL and Warner Home Video, to keep these movies alive and give viewers a say in what comes to market."
When consumers cast their votes at AOL Keyword: DVD Decision, they will also be able to enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a Samsung home theater system or other great prizes. Entries will be limited to one per day.
