Warner Bros. New Media Joins Forces With Packetvideo In Wireless Multimedia

(August 1, 2000 – Burbank, CA) – Warner Bros. New Media and PacketVideo Corporation, the global leader and pioneer in delivering wireless media technologies to mobile devices, have entered into a strategic alliance calling for the creation of all-new multimedia properties for distribution via PacketVideo’s innovative technology, which includes recently developed MPEG-4 software for distribution of video directly to the wireless space. The alliance was announced today by Kevin Tsujihara, Executive Vice President, New Media, Warner Bros., James Carol, CEO and Co-founder, PacketVideo, and Rob Tercek, President, Programming Division, PacketVideo. The first project in this new partnership will be Warner Bros. Animation’s creation and production of four original animated series for domestic and international distribution to the wireless environment. These series will be based on some of the Studio’s legendary cartoon icons. Each of these original series will link directly to one of Warner Bros.’ two popular Web sites, Warner Bros. Online (www.warnerbros.com) or Entertaindom (www.entertaindom.com). In addition to this original content, trailers from Warner Bros.’ upcoming feature films as well as promos for programs from Warner Bros. Television, Telepictures Productions and The WB Television Network will also be part of the programming slate for PacketVideo’s wireless application. Marvin the Martian, Warner Bros.’ animated embodiment of the 21st century, will serve as an introductory identifier, welcoming users to “the entertainment device of the future,” when PacketVideo wireless applications are launched on “personal digital assistants.” Warner Bros. New Media and PacketVideo will explore developing other applications, including short video games, video trading cards and greeting cards. “Warner Bros. is continuously seeking new opportunities to extend our brands both in our traditional businesses and beyond,” said Tsujihara. “It is our belief that wireless multimedia will reach and help define the audience of the future and we are excited to be working with PacketVideo to further this goal.” “Warner Bros. is widely regarded for delivering top-notch entertainment programming and we are very pleased to be joining them to bring their world class entertainment to the wireless medium,” said Carol. PacketVideo’s MPEG-4 based software enables the encoding, decoding, and transmission of full motion video over wireless networks on mobile devices. The technology enables the distribution of video over wireless networks with bit rates as low as 14.4 kbps (which is the rate for networks in the U.S. today) as well as 2.5G and 3.5G networks. The technology is air-interface independent, which means that it works across any type of wireless network, including CDMA, GSM, TDMA, GPRS, and UMTS. PacketVideo is working with wireless carriers in the U.S. and internationally to trial the technology over their networks. The company has also announced alliances with leading device and silicon designers and manufacturers to develop hardware utilizing PacketVideo technology, including Casio, Compaq, Intel, NEC, SANYO, and Texas Instruments.
