(April 28, 2009 – Burbank, CA) – Escape into the magical world of the Smurfs on August 18, 2009 when Warner Home Video (WHV) releases another captivating volume of the award-winning animated television series on DVD. Titled “The Smurfs: Smurfy Tales,” this delightful title will feature five uncut episodes of the hugely popular 80’s television series. Presented in eye-catching packaging, this compilation will retail for $14.97 SRP. Order due date has been set for July 14, 2009.
Kids and adults will be entertained with this charming collection of five super-Smurfy episodes (more than 90 minutes total!) starring all their favorite Smurf characters. Available on DVD for the first time, episodes include:
• “The Good, The Bad and the Smurfy” – Papa Smurf and some of the others are abducted by wizard Mordain, who seeks to overthrow the kingdom.
• “Johan’s Army” – The Smurfs help Johan and Peewee protect the castle when his army has been rendered useless.
• “The Last Laugh” – Gargamel’s giggle glitter causes uncontrollable fits of laughter in the Smurfs.
• “The A-Maze-Ing Smurf” – The Smurfs meet Malchior the Magnificent inside his labyrinthine manor.
• “The Lost City of Yore” – Nosey’s butting in gets the other Smurfs in the middle of an argument over the evil scepter of Yore.
Bonus features for this title include “Meet the Smurfs,” an interactive menu page that offers clips of various Smurfs characters, including Smurfette, Trumpet, Clumsy, Vanity and Handy. There is also a graphically re-created Smurf Village that allows viewers to unlock secrets.
The Smurfs are a group of over 100 bluish, three-apple tall creatures who live in the mushroom homes of Smurf Village. They are led by 543-year-old Papa Smurf (who doesn’t look a day over 530). Their lives would be perfect were it not for their villainous
Gargamel, a wizard who spends his days trying to capture them to eat, turn into gold, or for other evil reasons. Gargamel’s cat Azrael adds to the menace, always looking for a tasty, Smurfy snack.
Produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, The Smurfs originally premiered as part of NBC’s Saturday morning programming lineup. The Emmy® nominated series ran for nine seasons on NBC earning a 42% share of the U.S. Saturday morning audience. “The Smurfs: Season 1, Volume 1,” “The Smurfs: Season 1, Volume 2,” and “The Smurfs: Volume 1” were released by WHV in 2008 and 2009.
“‘The Smurfs’ is one of the most successful animated television series to have aired and we are pleased to bring more episodes of this popular program to DVD,” commented Amit Desai, WHV Vice President of Family, Animation & Sports Marketing. He added, “Adults today love sharing this program with younger generations because it offers so many wonderful, positive messages about friendship, love, honesty, kindness and forgiveness, and presents these themes in an entertaining context, with beautiful animation and endearing stories.”
