###
“TCM Greatest Classic Legends: Sidney Poitier”
-
• “BLACKBOARD JUNGLE” (1955) - Racial and sexual tensions. Violence. Gangs. Apathy. Hot-button issues in schools today were tackled then in “Blackboard Jungle,” with Glenn Ford as an idealistic inner-city teacher and Sidney Poitier, in a star-making performance, as a teen misfit.
• “EDGE OF THE CITY” (1957) - Two laborers (Poitier and John Cassavetes) face corruption on the New York waterfront and bond across society’s black/white divide in this directing debut by Martin Ritt (“Sounder,” “Norma Rae”). The powerful cast includes Jack Warden and Ruby Dee.
• “SOMETHING OF VALUE” (1957) - In colonial Kenya, former childhood playmates Peter (Rock Hudson) and Kimani (Poitier) have maintained a deep, if unlikely, friendship. But with the bloody Mau Mau uprising, the men discover that even the strongest bond may not be stronger than the cry for freedom.
• “A PATCH OF BLUE” (1965) - Selina (Elizabeth Hartman) is blind and white. Helping her see the world anew is kindly Gordon Ralfe (Poitier), who is black, though Selina doesn’t know it. This impactful film won Shelley Winters an Oscar for her role as Selina’s bigoted, abusive mother.
-
• “SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS” (1961) - Deanie (Wood) is a teenager eager to do right in her 1920s Kansas town, but the emotions she shares with boyfriend Bud (Warren Beatty) are too strong. The conflict between behavior and desire may ruin them both in this Oscar winner* from director Elia Kazan.
• “GYPSY” (1962) - This film version of the Broadway hit sweeps you up in the roller-coaster relationship of Louise (Wood), the wallflower who blossoms into sophisticated stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, and her ambitious mother, Rose (Rosalind Russell). Karl Malden costars.
• “SEX AND THE SINGLE GIRL” (1964) - Snoopy magazine editor Bob Weston (Tony Curtis) and “Sex and the Single Girl” author Helen Gurley Brown (Wood) square off in a ‘will-she/won’t-she’ breezy battle of the sexes. Henry Fonda and Lauren Bacall join in the comic combat as a warring neighbor couple.
• “INSIDE DAISY CLOVER” (1965) - Daisy Clover (Wood) is a star at 15 – but in the 1930s, “star treatment” can mean anything from being discovered to being discarded. Robert Redford and Ruth Gordon costar in this blend of Hollywood stardust and melodrama.
-
• “FOR ME AND MY GAL” (1942) - Gene Kelly debuts and Garland dazzles in this Busby Berkeley-directed tale of a song-and dance pair who take on tank towns, tough times and WWI while struggling for show-biz success. Boasting a hit parade of era tunes, this film is brimming with old-fashioned charm.
• “THE HARVEY GIRLS” (1946) - This musical slice of Americana celebrates the restaurants that dished out civilization to Old West rail passengers. Highlights include Garland holding saloon patrons at gunpoint, Ray Bolger and Virginia O’Brien at their comic best, and Angela Lansbury’s stylish wickedness.
• “IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME” (1949) - In between “The Shop Around the Corner” and “You’ve Got Mail” came “In the Good Old Summertime,” a tale of two squabbling music-shop clerks. Garland and Van Johnson’s version has mail plus classic tunes evoking an era of straw boaters and silvery moons.
• “SUMMER STOCK” (1950) - In her final M-G-M musical, Garland plays a farm owner who’s riled when her actress sister (Gloria De Haven) wants to stage a musical in the family barn. A turn of events ensures that Garland and Gene Kelly do their share of singing and dancing to a bumper crop of tunes.
