São Paulo Football Club Appoints Warner Bros. Consumer Products Brazil The Exclusive Master Licensee For Brazil And Japan
(April 11, 2007 - São Paulo, Brazil) — São Paulo Football Club [SPFC], one of the most successful and admired Brazilian Football Clubs, announced the appointment of Warner Bros. Consumer Products [WBCP] as its sole and exclusive master licensee for Brazil and Japan.
This appointment grants WBCP the rights to license, manufacture, distribute and promote Club-branded merchandise in Brazil and Japan. WBCP will utilize their creative licensing and merchandising expertise to develop a complete range of licensed products. The broad licensing program will include leisure apparel and accessories, toys and games, housewares and domestics, stationery, gifts and collectible items among other key categories. The agreement also allows Warner Bros.’ legendary Looney Tunes characters to be partnered with the marks and players of SPFC.
“WBCP has long been one of the most successful entertainment licensing enterprises, and with our global infrastructure, we have the unique ability to create a licensing and merchandising program that speaks directly to Brazilian football fans,” said Jeffrey Whalen, senior vice president, international licensing.
The popularity of football from Brazil continues to soar around the globe. Research indicates that annual global sports revenues are roughly $85 billion a year – made up of ticket sales, merchandise, sponsorships and TV rights. Of this, $45 billion is attributed to the US market and the remaining $40 billion to markets outside of the US. The merchandise portion is estimated to be $14 billion and $12.5 billion, respectively.
SPFC will join a growing portfolio of football clubs, national teams and high profile tournaments represented by Warner Bros. Consumer Product. These include among others, AC Milan, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Paris Saint- Germain and Juventus, the UEFA Champions League, the EURO 2008, the Mexican National Team and Mexico’s Club America.
“The partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products will allow SPFC to leave behind the amateur marketing that has always been the tone in the football business in Brazil,” said Juvenal Juvencio, São Paulo Futebol Clube´s president. “It is the step ahead for a club that is facing the future far from the geographic barriers and that positions itself side-by-side with the big clubs in the licensing field too.”
This venture joins two partners who are leaders in their respective fields: WBCP is the second largest entertainment licensor in the world with more than $6 billion in worldwide retail sales, while SPFC is among the top three clubs in Brazil in terms of number of supporters.
“The partnership between SPFC and WBCP is a milestone for Brazilian Football,” said Julio Casares, marketing director SPFC. “We are convinced that we are headed in the right direction for the professionalism of football licensing in Brazil; this is an historical moment that puts SPFC on the same level as the biggest clubs in the world.”
“SPFC is a prestigious Brazilian Club that we are adding to our already broad soccer portfolio. Soccer merchandising is a fast growing business for us, and nowhere is this opportunity more exciting than right here in Brazil,” said Marcos Bandeira de Mello, general manager, WBCP Brazil. “Working alongside our licensees and retail partners, we intend to build the awareness and fan base of the clubs we represent just as we do for our movies and television shows the world over. We are delighted to embark on this partnership with the São Paulo Football Club.”
As a global leader in entertainment licensing, WBCP is leveraging the extensive experience it has in building entertainment brands such as Looney Tunes, Harry Potter, Batman, Superman and other properties and applying it to sports--another powerful entertainment form. Creating high quality merchandise that captures the passion of fans around the globe, WBCP has been able to extend the reach of some of the world’s most famous teams to broader demographics.
