DC Comics’ Super Heroes Batman, Superman And Wonder Woman Become Protectors Of Safety In Classrooms Nationwide
(April 13, 2000 – Burbank, CA) - Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and their DC Super Heroes partners are poised to bring a message of safety first to thousands of elementary school children as part of an annual in-school activity kit entitled “Staying Safe with the DC Super Heroes.”
Now in its second year, the “Staying Safe with DC Super Heroes” program for 2000 will build on the success of its inaugural year with the addition of a special free photo event at Warner Bros. Studio Stores nationwide. To kick off National Safe Kids Week (May 6 - 13), students participating in the “Staying Safe with DC Super Heroes” program will be invited to visit their local Warner Bros. Studio Store on Saturday, May 6th from 10:00am - 2:00pm. There they can have their photo taken with a DC Super Hero standee to create their own safety information cards - one to keep for themselves and one for their parents to keep at home. Each ID card will contain spaces for important emergency information in case a child is ever lost, missing or injured away from home. According to Youth Media International’s (YMI) educational advisory panel, made up of educators who contributed to the development of this program, safety information cards are very important to both children and adults. In many cases, parents do not have a current photo of their child, and this activity prompts them to update their child’s information annually while helping students practice observation and safety awareness.
Developed by DC Comics, Warner Bros. Consumer Products and YMI the teaching kits include 5 reproducible master activity lessons, a teacher’s guide that provides background information, learning objectives, daily lesson plans and a poster, featuring a safety challenge from the DC Super Heroes. The activities are designed to help children learn important ways to stay safe in and out of school, and specifically target ways to stay safe at school, on the Internet, in emergencies and drug awareness.
