About the Films
“TCM Greatest Classic Films: Marx Brothers”
“A Day at the Races” - It’s a diagnosis of laughter as the Marxes skewer the medical profession and bring home a racetrack winner. On your Marx for tootsie-frootsie ice cream, madcap medical exams, wallpaper wackiness and more.
“A Night in Casablanca” - It’s the Nazis vs. the nutsies when the brotherly trio foils Axis criminal activity at a hotel swirling in intrigue and whirling with nonstop nonsense.
“Room Service” - Lucille Ball and Ann Miller co-star with the boys in a riotous romp about a cash-strapped theatrical troupe trying to nail a backer for their new Broadway venture.
“At the Circus” - Big-top bedlam results in this 3-ring comedy caper in which Groucho sings the praises of Lydia the Tattooed Lady and Eve Arden slinks around the walls and ceiling as a shady acrobat.
“TCM Greatest Classic Films: Romance”
“Splendor in the Grass” - Two teenagers (Natalie Wood and screen-debuting Warren Beatty) find their intense feelings for each other put them at odds with their families and the rigid respectability of their 1920s Kansas town. Elia Kazan directs a poetic portrait of young love from an Oscar®-winning* William Inge screenplay.
“Love in the Afternoon” - May-December romance is in bloom when music student Audrey Hepburn and millionaire playboy Gary Cooper cross paths. Laughs, Parisian settings, champagne elegance – director/co-writer Billy Wilder delivers them all in a soufflé-light comedy charmer also starring Maurice Chevalier.
“Mogambo” - In the jungles of Kenya, safari guide Clark Gable is attracted to two beautiful women: a tough out-of-work showgirl (Ava Gardner) and the prim wife (Grace Kelly) of his anthropologist boss. John Ford directs a location-shot Red Dust remake that captured Oscar® nominations* for both ladies.
“Now, Voyager” - A tender love story, a taut psychological drama and an inspiring tale of physical and spiritual transformation, Experience all three in this Bette Davis career milestone as she magically plays a spinster who defies her domineering mother to discover love, heartbreak and eventual contentment.
“TCM Greatest Classic Films: Sci-Fi Adventures”
“Them!” - Radiation-mutated ants – 12 feet long and capable of lifting tons – become giant problems for James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, James Arness and all of Los Angeles. “Fascinating to watch. ‘Them!’ is taut science fiction” (A.H. Weiler, The New York Times).
“The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms” - An A-bomb test in the Arctic awakens a gargantuan prehistoric dinosaur that makes New York City its stomping ground in the movie (from a story by Ray Bradbury and with superb special effects by Ray Harryhausen) that launched a string of Atomic Age creature features.
“World Without End” - Hugh Marlowe, Rod Taylor and other Mars-mission astronauts skid on a time warp into a post-apocalyptic future Earth marked by fear, mutant monstrosities and a diminishing group of subterranean survivors. Can these wayfarers from the past preserve our world’s future?
“Satellite in the Sky” - A stalwart crew (and a female reporter stowaway) guides a stratospheric jet rocket ship on the first space flight. The mission also involves another first: the outer-space detonation of the feared tritonium bomb. But mechanical failures threaten to trigger disaster. Strap in for suspense!
