“The Matrix Reloaded” Shatters Real World Box Office Records With $134.3 Million Opening Weekend, Biggest Consecutive 4-Day Opening In Motion Picture History

(May 19, 2003 – Burbank, CA) – Matrix fans jacked into theaters across North America in record numbers to see how deep the rabbit hole goes in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ “The Matrix Reloaded.” Making motion picture history and shattering numerous industry records, the four day opening weekend domestic box office receipts for the highly anticipated second chapter in the Matrix trilogy totaled $134.3 million, setting a new record for the biggest consecutive four day domestic box office gross in cinema history – despite the film’s R-rating. Becoming only the second film in history to gross over $100 million in its first three days, “Reloaded’s” $91.8 million three day weekend gross is Warner Bros. Pictures’ largest weekend gross in Studio history, surpassing the record set in 2001 by “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” with its $90.3 million opening. “We’re thrilled that the opening weekend box office for ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ exceeded even our highest expectations,” said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures and NPV Entertainment, a Silver Pictures production, “The Matrix Reloaded,” starring KEANU REEVES, LAURENCE FISHBURNE and CARRIE-ANNE MOSS. The film also stars HUGO WEAVING, JADA PINKETT SMITH and GLORIA FOSTER. “The Matrix Reloaded” is written and directed by THE WACHOWSKI BROTHERS and produced by JOEL SILVER.
