"Tomb Raider" First Look
At 28 years old Alicia Vikander already has a career that would make many actors twice her age weep with jealousy. Among many of her screen credits, she's played a secret agent alongside Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., won an Oscar for her portrayal as artist Gerda Wegener in The Danish Girl and starred as the sentient robot Ava in Ex Machina. Now she's outfitting herself in the famous tank top and cargo pants of the videogame world's most notorious archeologist Lara Croft in the 2018 release of Tomb Raider.
Warner Bros. Pictures has released three images of Vikander in the role of Lara along with an official synopsis to the film. It has now been revealed that the movie will delve into Lara's origin story as a struggling young woman in London working as a bike courier who lost her father to mysterious circumstances seven years earlier. The need to solve the puzzle of her father's death serves as the impetus for Lara traveling somewhere off the coast of Japan where she faces treacherous circumstances and begins the journey that earns her the name of tomb raider.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Vikander shared her excitement about portraying the well-known character by saying:
I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past. She also has a fantastic mix of traits—tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick ass!
Tomb Raider comes to theaters March 16, 2018.
