Zora (Nia Long), the 18-year-old daughter of a very independent, single mother and proud African American (Whoopi Goldberg), learns from a blood test that she is not related to the long-deceased, well-respected black man she had believed to be her parent.

The teenager begins searching a sperm bank's records for her biological father, only to discover that he turns out to be a car dealer (Ted Danson) who also happens to be white.
