It's Solar Eclipse Day!

All across North America today, people will be eagerly awaiting a celestial phenomenon where the moon passes between the sun and Earth, blocking all or partial sunlight for up to three hours.This is the first solar eclipse (no, not of the heart) across the continental United States since 1979 and we're ready for it! 

Cinematically, an eclipse often signals a coming change, a fresh start or can be used as a way to explain away some freaky unseen scientific turn of events. We've rounded up a handful of movies that use the eclipse trope from our the Warner Bros. library. Little Shop of Horrors

Without an eclipse, there would be no Little Shop of Horrors. It was during the blackout of the sun that a mysterious event occurred and brought our little Audrey II to life. 

Ladyhawke

In the fantasy film Ladyhawke, the eclipse took on a religious meaning—a time when there was no day or night. It served as a signal that a time of forgiveness had come and it was now time to break a curse.

Dolores Claiborne

Kathy Bates as Dolores Claiborne finally breaks free from her abusive oppressor at the same moment a total eclipse blocks all light overhead.

2001: A Space Odyssey

It may or may not be a classic total eclipse but the opening scene of heavenly bodies in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey is forever remembered by audiences with a great musical crescendo as planets align and represent the passage of time.
