Getting Sweet on "Riverdale"
With critics and fans alike raving about The CW’s new series, Riverdale, which debuted last Thursday, the one-hour drama—based on the Archie Comics—has a sweet surprise in tomorrow night’s second episode (February 2 at 9/8c on The CW) when everyone’s favorite comic book band Josie and the Pussycats make an appearance and perform “Candy Girl (Sugar Sugar),” the 2009 single from Inner Circle, which, of course, includes The Archies’ #1 hit “Sugar, Sugar” from the summer of 1969.
You could say that this special performance is bringing things full circle as executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa explains: “The hit song ‘Sugar, Sugar’ has always been a huge part of Archie’s history, so we knew we had to include it in Riverdale in some way. Since Archie’s just starting his musical journey when we meet him, we thought it would be a fun reinvention to have Josie and the Pussycats perform an updated version of ‘Sugar, Sugar’—with an assist from Riverdale High’s cheerleaders and resident mean girl Cheryl Blossom.”

Series star Ashleigh Murray (Josie McCoy) said: “As if stepping into the shoes of a fiery icon like Josie wasn’t enough, I was gifted the opportunity to reimagine and rock out on the classic ‘Sugar, Sugar.’ And boy, was it sweet.” The song features backing vocals by series star Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom), as well as guest stars Asha Bromfield (Melody) and Hayley Law (Valerie), who play the Pussycats.
If you’re a little late to the party, don’t worry as you can stream the premiere episode for free on The CW App. The first two episodes will also be airing back-to-back this Saturday on The CW (8/7c). Time to get caught up in the mystery and drama of small-town life found only in Riverdale.
