New to Blu

The Warner Archive Collection (WAC) is pumping up its Blu-ray inventory in the first few months of this new year with an impressive list of classic titles from Bogie and Bacall to Guest and Hitchcock, along with a cult fav. The Big Sleep

Key Largo

The final film featuring the box-office bonanza of Bogart/Bacall was the classic Key Largo. Directed by the legendary John Huston and featuring a cast of silver screen icons—Bogart, Bacall, Edward G. Robinson, Lionel Barrymore and Claire Trevor (in her Oscar winning performance)—this 1948 suspenseful story of a group of people held hostage by a gangster and his goons never goes out of style. Blu-ray Release Date: February 23.

Double Shot of Hitchcock Thrillers

The Wrong Man

Alfred Hitchcock will always be the "Master of Suspense" and now two of Hitch’s thrillers are coming to Blu-ray. First up is 1956’s The Wrong Man, starring screen greats Henry Fonda and Vera Miles in the true story of nightclub musician "Manny" Balestrero who is wrongly accused of robbery and watches his life unravel from there. Presented like a semi-documentary and one of the very few Hitchcock films based on real-life events, this exceptional drama was also the final film he would make with Warner Bros. Blu-ray Release Date: January 26.

I Confess

Released in 1953, I Confess is Hitchcock’s thriller about a priest (Montgomery Clift) who refuses to turn in a killer who has admitted the crime during his church confession. This adherence to the sanctity of the confessional soon creates a deeper quandary for the man of the cloth as the lead detective (Karl Malden) soon turns the focus of his investigation towards the clergyman himself. One of Hitchcock’s most underrated films. Blu-ray Release Date: February 16.

A Mighty Wind

The fourth of Christopher Guest’s five mockumentaries—following This is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show—returns to Tap’s comedic look at music, but the target this time around is the folk world: Birkenstocks (with socks, of course), brightly colored matching outfits and cheery faces. The always hilarious ensemble cast is all here: Guest (who also directs), Eugene Levy (who co-wrote the script with Guest), Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, Catherine O’Hara, Jane Lynch, Parker Posey and Fred Willard. On the musical front, "A Kiss At the End of the Rainbow" was nominated for an Oscar and the title song won a Grammy. Blu-ray Release Date: February 9.

The Ice Pirates

A modest box-office success at the time of its 1984 release, this comedic sci-fi adventure has gathered a sizeable cult following of fans over the past 30 years. Starring Robert Urich, Angelica Huston, Mary Crosby, Ron Perlman and John Carradine, The Ice Pirates rejoices in its campy look and tongue-in-cheek tone. It’s a futuristic plot revolving around the scarcity of water—the galaxy’s only valuable commodity that is controlled by the Templars—and the pirates who seek to steal it. Have an Ice Day!
