Green Production is a No-Brainer for "iZombie"

Every year, Warner Bros. engages our productions shooting in Burbank, Vancouver, New York and Atlanta to help them establish environmentally friendly practices to follow on set. Productions designate a Green Lead—a team member who will set goals, communicate progress and motivate the crew to integrate green production practices into their work and daily routines.

This season, there are 23 Green Leads, including Brittany Thomson, 2nd Assistant Production Office Coordinator (APOC) from iZombie. Read on to discover how iZombie cast and crew members are working hard to be part of the Green Scene from Thomson herself.

Being a Green Production is a NO-BRAINER for iZombie

The undead are back with a vengeance for Season Two! And nothing is more important to those who are doomed to walk our precious earth forever than sustaining the environment.

To save on plastic water bottles, the DEADicated crew brought back their iZombie water bottles from Season One to continue our green initiative. Now all 160 crew members have Thermos water bottles to refill each day rather than using thousands of plastic bottles.

Our partnership with local business Keep it Green Recycling has again proven to be beneficial, as we have seen more recycling of basic materials like paper, plastic, metal, glass and styrofoam, as well as more difficult items such as ink/toner, CDs/DVDs, bulbs, batteries and pens.

We’ve also continued to use our “Compost Transfer” system when we are on location—catering collects all compost from lunch and craft service, transport then brings it back to the studio to our industrial size compost bin. With this system in place, we typically divert six yards of food waste each month from the landfill. Catering has also been using compostable plates, bowls, cups and coffee cups to reduce plastics on set.

In the Production Office, we’ve also begun to use environmentally friendly cleaning products from Greenworks. Paper towels used with these products can be composted, which limits dangerous chemical waste in landfills. Paper towels in the office bathrooms are made from recycled paper and are composted, rather than being put in the trash.

It’s the little things that can be done on our show daily to stay progressive and set a precedent in the industry,” says Production Office Assistant, Murdoch MacNeil.
