Baseball scout Edward G. Robinson puts hopefuls through their paces to see who will earn a spot on a New York Giants’ minor-league team.

Each year they come by the hundreds, each hoping for that one big break that will propel them to baseball stardom. Each year, John Lobert (Robinson), baseball scout for the New York Giants, is out on the field screening the hopefuls to find the next to become a Big Leaguer.

In Jeff Richards (Adam Polochuk), Lobert thinks he has found his next great prospect. But Adam's father has spent years saving his money to put his son through college and doesn't want him out on to play baseball for a living. But Lobert's daughter, Christy (Vera-Ellen), comes to the rescue. And at last Adam wins his father's consent—and goes on to the big leagues, becoming a national home run hero. There are a few notable cameos including one from future Hall of Fame pitcher Carl Hubbell.
