Manhattan, 1942. When Gloves Donahue (Bogart), a former gangster who wagers to help support his mother, stumbles across the murdered body of a friend, he and his cohorts investigate. Their search leads them to a beautiful nightclub singer (Kaaren Verne), her rather odd pianist (Peter Lorre) and a Nazi spy ring that has been coercing her to act against her country.
Now, these rough-edged patriots do their duty to defeat the Nazis' evil plot.
